Privacy Policy
Last updated October 14, 2026
City Charter is published by Brief Post, Inc. This policy explains what the City Charter app and this website do with information. The short version: where you walk stays on your phone.
The short version
- There are no accounts. You don't sign up, and we don't receive your walks, your location, or your progress.
- Your phone's location is used on the phone, only during a walk you start, to work out which streets you've walked.
- We don't run ads, we don't sell or share your information, and we don't track you across other apps or websites.
What the app uses on your phone
Location. When you tap Chart, the app uses your phone's precise location to match where you are to streets on the map and fill them in. If you allow location "Always", the app keeps charting while your phone is locked, but only during a walk you started. iOS shows its location indicator while this happens.
What the app keeps. To show your map, your progress and your Logbook, the app saves on your phone: which street blocks you've charted and when, a summary of each walk (date, distance, time, number of blocks and the names of streets), and your settings such as tracking mode. It does not save a copy of your exact GPS track.
All of this stays on your phone. We cannot see it. Deleting the app removes it. If you use iCloud or computer backups for your phone, iOS may include the app's data in those backups under your own backup settings.
What we receive
From the app: nothing about you. The app does not send your location, walks or progress to us.
From this website: if you use the contact form or the early access form, we receive your email address, your name if you give it, and your message, so we can reply and, for early access, invite you to test the app. Like most websites, our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and browser type) for security and reliability.
Service providers
Maps by Mapbox. The app displays its map using Mapbox. To draw the map, the app requests map data from Mapbox, which means Mapbox receives technical information such as your IP address and device details, and which part of the map is being viewed. Mapbox may also collect anonymous usage and diagnostic information under its own privacy policy (mapbox.com/legal/privacy). We do not send Mapbox your walk history or a record of the streets you've charted.
Street data. The street network comes from OpenStreetMap contributors and is built into the app, so the app does not contact anyone to load it.
Apple. The app is distributed through TestFlight and the App Store. Apple handles installation and, if you choose to share them, crash reports and analytics according to Apple's privacy policy and your device settings.
Website providers. This website is hosted by Vercel, and messages from the contact and early access forms are delivered with Resend.
How we use information
We use the information we receive to answer your messages, send you a test invitation if you asked for early access, fix problems, and keep the website running. We don't use it for advertising, and we don't sell or rent it.
How long we keep it
Data on your phone stays until you delete the app. Support messages are kept as long as needed to help you and keep reasonable records. Early access requests are kept until we've sent your invitation or you ask us to remove them. We'll delete either on request.
Your choices
You control location access at any time in iOS Settings under City Charter, then Location. You can set it to "While Using" or "Never". Without location, you can still look around the map, but walks can't be charted. You can delete all app data by deleting the app. You can ask about, correct, or delete any message you've sent us by contacting us. More detail is on our Your Data & Rights page.
Children
City Charter is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.
Security
Walking data is held in the app's private storage on your phone, protected by iOS. Connections to this website and to map services use HTTPS. No method of storing or transmitting data is perfectly secure, but we limit what leaves your phone to what the map needs.
Where data is processed
We are based in the United States, and our providers may process information in the United States and other countries.
Changes to this policy
City Charter is in early testing. Features such as accounts, cloud backup and sharing are not available. Before we release a feature that collects or shares additional information, we'll update this policy and, where the law requires it, ask for your permission. The date at the top shows when this policy last changed.
